The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of flavonoids, particularly quercetin (Qu), hesperetin (Hp), naringenin (Ng) and luteolin (Lu) on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant activities of human erythrocyte membrane (EM). For this purpose, EM were isolated and treated with either Qu (25 microg mL(-1)), Hp (1 microg mL(-1)), Ng (5 microg mL(-1)), or Lu (5 microg mL(-1)) and incubated at 37 degrees C for 12 hours. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in EM were measured by using thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction. Catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities in EM were assayed spectrophotometrically by using the cytochrome c reduction method and by measuring NADPH consumption rate, respectively. When EM were treated with the flavonoids alone, we observed a slight increase in MDA level, a marked decrease in CAT and GSH-Px activities, and a slight increase in total antioxidant activity. When EM were incubated with Qu and Hp, but not with Lu and Ng, MDA levels were decreased, whereas CAT and GSH-Px activities were increased.
